EAGLE-Covering the training gap in digital skills for european SMEs manpower

Free training

Partner: Burgos University
Faculty/Department: Escuela Politécnica Superior/Digitalization Department
Course code:Course title: Basic control in the industry. Learn how to tune a PID controller.
Format: combined
Workload: 8 hours (4 presential lecture hours and 4 hours of autonomous work)
Number of ECTS credits awarded / Type of certification:
Course completion requirements:

Continuous assessment (20%): Monitoring of students’ work through evaluation questionnaires.
Final evaluation (80%): Performance evaluation of the CBL of a PID controller for the selected case study.
Target audience:
Primary: SMEs technicians
Other: students of technical careers, industry technicians, research institutes, etc.
Learning outcomes:
Upon the completion of the course, the participant will:
To acquire the basics of basic control in industry and its possible applications, to become familiar with one of the most common regulators in the process industry, the PID regulator, understanding each of the parameters of this regulator and the effect of its modification on the control of the process, to know some of the possible architectures and implementations of a PID controller, to learn different techniques for tuning a PID controller,
Course structure and syllabus:
hours below are shown in brackets as follows (presential/autonomous work)

Transversal concepts (30 min/30 min): Introduction to process control. Control pyramid, Types of processes. The control loop and variables involved. Examples of application.
Core content (1h/30 min): The PID controller. Proportional term, integral term and derivative term. Effect of parameters on the type of response. Tuning methods: trial and error, based on experiments. Automatic and adaptative tuning.
Expert content (1 h/1h): PID,PI-D and I-PD controllers. Filters on derivative action. Antiwind-up, reference tacking, bumpless transfer. Currently, how to implement a PID controller as software routine.
CBL module (1h/2h): Students will be given a case study, understand the operation of the process, the control objectives and the variables in the control loop. Specify the desired behaviour and select the type of controller. Tune the controller.
Guided reflection and feedback (30min): Depending on the results of the continuous assessment, feedback will be given on the basic concepts, feedback will be given on the proposed project.
